Energy-Efficiency Training & Professional Development
A founding goal of BPL is to provide the training that is needed to understand and maximize the potential of advanced, efficient buildings, helping to ensure America’s largest city remains ahead of the urban energy curve. For a decade, BPL has been at the forefront of workforce training in the energy efficiency and energy management fields, and our training programs are designed to meet the needs of workers in a variety of industries including facilities and real estate management, building operations and maintenance, and energy services and consulting.
Through our acclaimed continuing education programs, run in collaboration with the CUNY School of Professional Studies (SPS), NYSERDA, New York City agencies — including the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability and the Departments of Citywide Administrative Services, Education, and Small Business Services — trade unions, community organizations, and major property owners, we have trained more than 3,000 building operators, energy managers, auditors, and sales professionals. Like our research, most of our classes focus on optimizing existing opportunities in a building, whether by fine-tuning steam traps or analyzing the performance of the Building Automation System.
New York City Building Operator Training: We are partnering with the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability, the Department of Small Business Services, and CUNY SPS to offer no-cost energy-focused training to operators of small- to mid-size apartment buildings. The full program roll-out will take place in 2017. If you’re an eligible owner or manager, be sure to complete the pre-application form to be the first to be notified of class offerings.
DCAS Energy Management Training for NYC City Agency Personnel: Since 2010 we have partnered with DCAS and CUNY SPS to offer a range of training courses to current City agency employees, including Building Operator Certification and trades-specific courses.

Over 2,500 New York City technicians and engineers have successfully become BOC certified through BPL since 2009.
Building Re-tuning: Building Re-tuning (BRT), originally developed by the Pacific Northwest National Lab, is a protocol for energy optimization and monitoring to improve building performance. BPL is proud to be a partner with PNNL in broadening its reach in the NYC market.
NYSERDA Tuition Subsidy Program (2014 – 2016): BPL received a major Workforce Development Training award from NYSERDA in 2014, allowing us to offer our energy efficiency trainings at discounted rates to eligible participants. Under this program we offered programs for a diverse range of professionals which includes courses in energy efficiency sales and finance in addition to our traditional courses focused on O&M. In addition to BOC and BRT, courses offered included:
